    • Pam Cirbo asked the Board to strengthen Policy IKE, Promotion and Retention of Students for more academic accountability.
    • Sam Drury spoke to the Board about LPS performance issues.

    • Sam Drury stated that he supports the program, but he suggested that student-identifiable information on the second page [PDF 15KB] also be excluded from the questionnaire.

  • Fiscal Year 2006-2007 Adopted Budget: Board adopted the budget and appropriation resolution as presented.
  • Textbook Adoption: Multiple Copy Literature List Additions
    • Pam Cirbo request that The Bluest Eye remain out of the classroom and the library was included in her one-page letter [PDF 22KB] that she read to the Board.
    • The Board voted 5-0 to reinstate The Bluest Eye to the school libraries and to approve it for elective classes 11th grade and above; it had been previously removed from the libraries and the multiple copy literature list.
    • The Board also voted 3-2 that The Kite Runner be leveled to 10th grade based on student maturity; it had been listed for grade 9.

  • Elementary At-Risk Students Proposal
    • The 2005 elementary summer school program did not achieve the hoped-for results with these students.
    • Therefore, no elementary summer school program will be offered in 2006.
    • A new plan will be fully developed and presented to the Board in fall 2006.

  • Littleton High School Political Action Group: World Languages
    • The group acknowledged that they did not find research to support starting foreign languages at the elementary level.
    • Diana Holland said the Board is looking at expanding world languages in its strategic plan.
  • Opt-Out Procedures
    • The administration has been refining district procedures related to opting-out of instructional materials and activities and the way these procedures are implemented in the schools.
    • Pam Cirbo liked the direction of the opt-in/opt-out procedure and sees this as a positive result from the issue of The Bluest Eye.
    • Mollie McDonald said pamphlets about the revised policies and procedures would be available at the beginning of the school year as well as the teacher orientation.

    • Scott Murphy reported that overall enrollment without charter schools is 119 lower than the 2005-2006 actual.
    • Centennial Academy brought 95 out-of-district students.

    • Sam Drury provided several handouts:
      • Remediation rates of LPS students entering Colorado colleges
      • CSAP results for Arapahoe, Heritage, and Littleton high schools
      •  LPS Colorado Department of Education (CDE) No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) high school data for 2005.
  • K-10 Math Materials
    • The Board approved the recommended list of materials as presented.
  • Overview of Professional Learning Communities (PLC)
    • PLC is a model of accountability for student learning that is being implemented throughout the district.
    • Jim Sturgell said that PLCs are in place in all of the district schools.
    • He said the district is pursuing the PLC model in order to positively impact student achievement, to renew the teaching profession, and build capacity within teachers.
    • Shirley Trees indicated there are four guiding questions:
      • What is it we expect students to learn?  (These are the essential learnings.)
      • How will we know when they have learned it?  (These are the department assessments.)
      • How will we respond when they don't learn and what if they already know it?  (This is the pyramid of interventions across the continuum.)
    • She said there must be alignment with essential learnings.

    • Sam Drury commented on the math curriculum.
      • He considers it a model for others.
      • It was a districtwide approach.
      • It identified essential learning objectives.
      • It It underwent a thorough review by the Board.

    • LPS curriculum coordinator Susan Dalton presented the core materials and supplementary materials being proposed [PDF 39KB].
    • Sam Drury asked several questions about the Littleton High School IMP program:
      • Specifically why Heritage and Arapahoe high schools did not select IMP
      • Why Eaglecrest and Columbine high schools discontinued it.
      • Why no Douglas County high school plans to implement it.
    • Sam also asked questions relating to the Bellevue, Washington district with respect to graduation requirements, student population, and reducing the number of below-grade students.
