Ward 3 Centennial City
Council candidate George Shen pleaded guilty last year to a Class 3
misdemeanor harassment charge, the Centennial Citizen has
learned.
According to a report filed in the 18th Judicial
District, Shen, 23, was sentenced to two years of probation in
December 2006 for "following a person in a public place." The plea
was made in conjunction with dismissal of more serious charges,
which included two Class 5 felonies for stalking and a misdemeanor
charge of carrying a concealed weapon. The victim was reportedly a
current or former girlfriend.
Shen is hopeful that voters
will not judge him by the incident.
"I would like to let the
citizens know that regardless of my background, that I full well
intend on doing what is best for the citizens of Centennial," he
said.
The candidate,
who serves in the Army, offered a vague explanation of the
episode.
"It actually has to do with some more in-depth
things regarding the military, but aside from that, I would
selectively choose not to make a comment," he said.
Shen is
seeking the seat held by the term-limited Andrea Suhaka.
His
opponent Patrick Anderson was surprised to learn of the candidate's
situation.
"It's a little bit shocking to me, but I don't
think I have any further comment," he said.
Shen was the
only council hopeful to miss last week's candidate forum hosted by
the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, though he has submitted
answers to a candidate questionnaire that will be published next
week.
In a candidate announcement, Shen wrote that he is
running "to show my community that each and every one of them can
impact the whole to a very strong degree, but more importantly, I
want to provide a service to the people, as well give more
opportunities to better them and their families."
